Adults who enjoy a favorite brew here and there may like to know that part of the aroma and bitterness in their beer comes from the hops. The hops counter the sweet taste of malt to provide a more balanced beer and also apparently act as a natural preservative to keep the beer fresh.
Recent studies reported in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry show that hop leaves, or “bracts” that aren’t used in the beer-brewing process might actually help fight cavities. Bracts have been shown to contain healthy antioxidants. Extracts from these leaves seem to stop bacteria, the kind that forms on teeth.
Considering the growing number of microbreweries in the U.S., maybe it’s time to start concentrating on those bracts leaves and see what other healthful effects they may offer!
