Your Dentist Is Your First Line of Defense Against Oral Cancer

According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, your dentist is your “first line of defense” in the early detection of oral cancer, a disease that kills at least one U.S. individual every hour, every day.

During an oral cancer screening, your dentist will check for red or white patches or mouth sores and will feel for lumps or other abnormalities in the neck.people

Patients at higher risk for oral cancer include smokers, those who heavily use alcohol, or people who have had heavy sun exposure or a previous oral cancer diagnosis. People of all ages are also getting oral cancer from viral and environmental sources. Another fact: Oral cancer is more common in men than women.

If you’ve experienced any of the above-mentioned symptoms or bleeding, numbness, hoarseness, or even unexplained ear pain, it’s time to make a special screening appointment.

Even if you’re not due for your six-month check-up, don’t wait. When found early on, oral cancer has an 80-90% survival rate.
