At Williamsburg Dental, we offer three main ways to replace a missing tooth. Each one has its own strengths. The right choice depends on your situation, your budget, and what you want your smile to look like. Here’s what you need to know.

Option 1: Dental Implants
Think of an implant as a replacement for the root as well as the crown. We place a small titanium post into your jawbone where the tooth used to be. Over the next few months, your bone actually grows around that post, fusing with it like it belongs there. Then we attach a custom-made crown on top. The result is often a tooth that looks, feels, and functions just like your natural ones.
What makes implants great:
- They’re permanent.
- They don’t rely on neighboring teeth for support.
- They also help preserve your jawbone, which starts to shrink when a tooth is missing.
What to think about:
- Implants take time: The whole process can take several months from start to finish.
- They are also the most expensive option upfront: But many patients find they’re worth it because they last for decades.
Option 2: Dental Bridge
A bridge does exactly what its name suggests. It bridges the gap. We create a false tooth (or teeth) that sits in the empty space. That false tooth is held in place by crowns that attach to the teeth on either side of the gap. Those neighboring teeth act like anchors, keeping everything stable.
What makes bridges great:
- They’re faster than implants: The whole process usually takes two or three appointments over a few weeks.
- They also cost less than implants, making them a good middle-ground option.
What to think about:
- A bridge does require us to shave down those healthy neighboring teeth to fit the crowns. That’s permanent.
- You also can’t floss between a bridge and your gum the same way you floss natural teeth: You’ll need a special floss threader to keep things clean underneath.
Option 3: Partial Denture
You’ve probably heard of dentures for people with no teeth. A partial denture is for people who still have some natural teeth but are missing one or more. A partial is a removable appliance that holds replacement teeth on a pink or gum-colored base. It clips onto your existing teeth for support. You take it out at night to clean it.
What makes partials great:
- They’re the most affordable option.
- They also don’t require any work on your healthy teeth.
- If you’re missing several teeth in different areas, a partial can fill all those gaps at once.
What to think about:
- Partials are removable, which some people find inconvenient.
- They can also feel bulkier than fixed options.
- Because they clip onto existing teeth, they can put extra stress on those teeth over time.
How Do You Choose?
There’s no single right answer for everyone. Here’s what we typically consider with patients:
- How many teeth are you missing? One tooth might be a great candidate for an implant. Several teeth might make a bridge or partial more practical.
- What is your budget? Implants are an investment. Bridges and partials cost less upfront.
- Are your neighboring teeth healthy? If they’re strong, they can support a bridge. If they have issues, an implant might be better.
- How long do you want it to last? Implants can last a lifetime. Bridges and partials typically need replacement after 10 to 15 years.
