If it’s been a while since your last dental cleaning, you might not remember what actually happens during that appointment. Or maybe you’ve never been entirely sure. You sit in the chair, someone pokes around a bit, and then you leave. Right?
There’s a little more to it than that. And understanding what we are doing and why might make your next visit feel a whole lot more comfortable. A standard cleaning appointment isn’t just one thing. It is actually three separate steps that work together to keep your mouth healthy.

Step One: The Exam
Before we pick up any instruments, your hygienist takes a careful look inside your mouth. They’re checking for obvious issues like swollen gums, areas that bleed easily, or anything that looks out of the ordinary.
This is also when we take x-rays if you’re due for them. At Williamsburg Dental, we use digital x-rays, which use significantly less radiation than the old film ones. They give us a clear picture of what’s happening below the surface, things we can’t see with our eyes alone.
Step Two: The Cleaning Itself
This is the part most people think about when they think about oral hygiene. Your hygienist uses special instruments to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, especially along the gumline and between teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth constantly. When it hardens into tartar, you can’t brush it off at home. Only a professional cleaning can remove it.
We also floss your teeth thoroughly and polish them with a gritty toothpaste that smooths the surfaces and makes it harder for new plaque to stick.
Step Three: The Dentist’s Check
After your cleaning, one of our dentists comes in for a final exam. They review your x-rays, check for any areas of concern, and make sure everything looks healthy.
This is your chance to ask questions. Notice something that’s been bothering you? Now is the time to bring it up.
Why Bother If Nothing Hurts?
Dental problems are sneaky. Cavities don’t always hurt until they’re deep. Gum disease can be completely painless in its early stages. By the time you feel something, the problem has often been brewing for months or even years.
Regular cleanings catch those problems early, when they are small and easy to fix. A tiny cavity that we spot on an x-ray only needs a small filling. That same cavity, left alone for another year, might need a root canal.
Regular cleanings also help prevent problems from starting in the first place. Removing tartar keeps your gums healthy. Polishing your teeth makes it harder for plaque to stick. It’s preventive care that often saves you time, money, and discomfort down the road.
What If You’re Nervous?
We understand. For some people, even a routine cleaning feels stressful. Maybe you have sensitive teeth. Maybe you have had a bad experience elsewhere. Or maybe you just don’t like someone poking around in your mouth.
That’s okay. Our team goes out of our way to make you comfortable. We explain everything before we do it. We check in with you throughout the appointment. And if you need a break, we stop.
We also have options for patients who need extra help relaxing. If a routine cleaning feels overwhelming, ask us about sedation. You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through it.
How Often Should You Come In?
For most people, twice a year is the sweet spot. That gives us enough time to catch problems early while keeping your teeth and gums in good shape between visits.
Some patients need to come more often, every three or four months, especially if they have a history of gum disease. We’ll let you know what schedule makes sense for you.
